Livability of the east side of Sendai Station

Welcome to our series of area introductions and recommendations for living in Sendai. In this first article, we explore the livability of the east side of Sendai Station.

The atmosphere around Sendai Station varies significantly between its east and west exits. The west exit, the station’s main entrance, is bustling with commercial facilities, including a pedestrian deck, a large bus terminal, and access to the Sendai Subway Station. Primarily designed for businesses, it offers limited residential properties within a 5-minute walk of the station.

In contrast, the east exit has been expanding rapidly, transforming into a mix of residential and commercial zones following a 2016 land readjustment project. The newly developed area features numerous stores, restaurants, and an upgraded bus terminal. Beyond the immediate vicinity of the station, it is predominantly residential, offering apartment buildings, a quieter atmosphere, several parks with playgrounds, and family-friendly spaces ideal for those seeking a balance between city convenience and suburban tranquility.

Sendai Station East Exit Overview

The immediate east exit of Sendai Station is marked by the newly constructed Yodobashi building. This bustling complex houses a variety of stores and the popular food alley “Oishii Mono Yokocho” (オイシイもの横丁) on the ground floor, offering a wide selection of delicious dining options. An expanded footpath connects this building to the former Yodobashi building, which has been repurposed to accommodate various shops, including the highly popular Lopia (ロピア) supermarket. Another prominent landmark in the area is the modern Hotel Metropolitan Sendai.

Although the station area has seen significant redevelopment, including adjacent office buildings, the east side of Sendai lacks a clearly defined boundary. The neighbourhoods on the east side are as follows; Tsutsujigaoka (榴岡)Tsutsujigaoka (榴ヶ岡)Shintera (新寺)Mototerakouji (元寺小路), Teppocho [Teppomachi (鉄砲町)Teppomachihigashi (鉄砲町東)Teppomachinishi (鉄砲町西)], and Nijuninmachi (二十人町). For the purposes of this article, we focus on neighborhoods within a 15-minute walking radius of the station, and just a few of the above.

While commercial and office buildings cluster around the station and along Miyagino-dori, the surrounding area is predominantly residential. Despite its close proximity to a major transportation hub, this broader area is known for its calm and tranquil environment, making it an attractive option for families and individuals seeking a quieter lifestyle.

The northern neighborhoods, including Teppomachi (鉄砲町) and Nijuninmachi (二十人町), are undergoing rapid redevelopment following land readjustment projects. New residential properties and condominiums are continuously being developed, complemented by ample parking lots, reflecting steady growth and ongoing urbanization in this area.

Southern Area: Traditional Charm

In contrast, the southern area, particularly Shintera (新寺), retains a distinct historical character. Dotted with temples and graveyards, it upholds its longstanding reputation as a quiet and serene residential district. Properties in this area are typically 10 to 30 years old, offering a traditional charm that contrasts with the modern developments in the northern neighborhoods.

Recreational Spaces
