Livability of Nagamachi

In our first article, we explored the livability of the east side of Sendai Station. In this article, we turn our focus to the livability of Nagamachi.

Nagamachi Station, served by both the JR Line and the Namboku Subway Line, is the southern sub-center of Sendai. With convenient access to central Sendai, a variety of commercial facilities, and a welcoming environment, it’s a highly livable area. The JR Line divides Nagamachi into distinct east and west sides. Let’s explore what makes Nagamachi unique.

Understanding Nagamachi’s Unique Characteristics

The atmosphere around Nagamachi Station differs significantly between its east and west sides.

Modern Development: AsutoNagamachi

Once the site of a JR freight yard, AsutoNagamachi underwent rapid redevelopment. Today, it features suburban-style large stores and towering apartment buildings over 20 stories high.

The main street in AsutoNagamachi stands out with its wide roads and sidewalks, creating an open, airy atmosphere. On one side of the street, you’ll find supermarkets, home improvement stores, and Tohoku’s only IKEA. On the other, high-rise apartment buildings dominate the skyline. This organized and spacious layout is rare in Sendai, making AsutoNagamachi a standout area.

Historic Charm: Nagamachi West Side

In contrast, the western side offers a different experience, blending history with modern living.

A Blend of Old and New

Near the west exit of Nagamachi Station, you’ll find a mix of rental buildings, primarily restaurants, and medium-sized apartment complexes about 10 stories high. A notable landmark here is “Taihakuru,” a redeveloped building that houses the cultural center, administrative offices, and a tower apartment on its upper floors.

Just beyond the main streets lies a quieter residential area filled with detached houses and apartments. As this side features older land, its roads are narrower and more winding than those on the east.

Shopping and Convenience

Heading further west, you’ll reach The Mall Sendai Nagamachi, a large shopping center. This places the Nagamachi area between Nagamachi Station and The Mall, offering residents unparalleled transportation and shopping convenience.

Final Thoughts

Nagamachi combines modern amenities with historic charm, offering a unique balance that appeals to a diverse range of residents. Its excellent transportation, shopping options, and community feel make it one of Sendai’s most desirable areas. Whether you prefer the bustling, redeveloped streets of AsutoNagamachi or the quieter, traditional atmosphere of the west side, there’s something here for everyone.
